Cruise port guide

Discover Aruba

Trade-wind beaches, desert-meets-sea landscapes, and a Southern Caribbean favorite. The pier is in Oranjestad โ€” walk town, or taxi to Eagle Beach.

If the ship calls here

One port, right in town. Pick beach, lighthouse, or a desert tour โ€” not all three far apart.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ผ Walk off the ship

Oranjestad

Dutch-Caribbean streets, duty-free blocks, and lunch on the waterfront. Fine if you want a low-effort call.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ผ Sand day

Eagle & Palm Beach

Eagle is the wide, quieter postcard. Palm is the high-rise strip with more chairs, bars, and water toys.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ผ Island loop

California Lighthouse

Northwest tip, dunes, and Arashi Beach nearby. Pair with an Arikok or casibari-rock tour if the call is long.

Fact of the day

Papiamento is the everyday voice

Dutch and Papiamento are official. Papiamento is the creole people actually speak โ€” a mix of Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, African languages, and Arawak. English and Spanish are widely understood in Oranjestad.

Interesting travel facts

Use these when the taxi climbs toward the lighthouse or someone asks why the trees lean one way.

One Happy Island

That slogan is on the license plates. Aruba is a constituent country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands โ€” Dutch in government, Caribbean in the water, and South American in latitude.

Outside the hurricane belt

Aruba sits far south in the Caribbean, about 18 miles off Venezuela. Storms still happen, but the island is rarely hit by hurricanes, which is why Southern Caribbean itineraries run year-round.

A desert in the Caribbean

This is a flat, riverless island with cactus, aloe, and divi-divi trees bent by the trade winds. Annual rain is often under 20 inches. Most drinking water is desalinated seawater.

Trade winds all day

Northeasterly trades keep the heat bearable and the flags horizontal. They also hide how strong the sun is. Reapply sunscreen even when it feels cool on Eagle Beach.

The ship docks in town

The cruise terminal sits at the north end of Oranjestad. You can walk into pastel Dutch-Caribbean streets, Renaissance Marketplace, and the main shopping blocks without a taxi.

Oranjestad means Orange City

The capital is named for the Dutch House of Orange. Expect colorful gables, Caya G. F. Betico Croes (the main shopping street), and a compact waterfront that works on a short call.

Eagle Beach is the postcard

A few minutes north of the pier, Eagle Beach is the wide, low-rise stretch that keeps landing on โ€œbest beachโ€ lists. Palm Beach, farther up, is the high-rise strip. Both are public.

California Lighthouse is not in California

The tower at the northwest tip is named for the steamship S.S. California, wrecked offshore in 1891. The lighthouse went up in the 1910s so the next ship would see the reef. It is still Arubaโ€™s tallest structure.

Two coasts, two seas

The leeward southwest is calm sand. The windward north and east is limestone, blowholes, and rough water โ€” better for a drive through Arikok National Park than a casual swim.

Arikok is a fifth of the island

Arikok National Park covers nearly 20 percent of Aruba: caves, petroglyphs, goat country, and the natural pool (Conchi) if seas allow. It is a jeep or tour day, not a stroll from the gangway.

Florin pegged to the dollar

The Aruban florin (AWG) is pegged at 1.79โ€“1.80 to the U.S. dollar. USD is accepted almost everywhere near the port. Carry small bills; taxis often prefer cash.

Good to know before you go

  • Bon dia is good morning in Papiamento. English works in shops and taxis.
  • Taxis use zone rates and often want cash. Confirm Eagle Beach or Palm Beach before you sit down.
  • The wind cools you and burns you. Hat, reef-safe sunscreen, and water.
  • Swim on the leeward beaches. The north shore is for photos and parks, not a casual dip.
  • Baby Beach is at the south end โ€” pretty and shallow, but a longer ride than Eagle.
